The ʿUqaylid dynasty, also known as the ʿUqaylid Emirate or ʿUqaylid Realm, was a Shīa Arab realm with several lines that controlled much of Iraq, Levant, Jazira and southern Anatolia; it also controlled northwestern Iran and northern Arabia in the late tenth and eleventh centuries. Over the course of their history, the ʿUqaylid kings extended their rule over most of the neighboring emirates, eventually becoming a significant regional power—even to the point of imposing tribute on the Byzantines. The main line centered in Mosul for more than a century.
