German crew of SMS Emden, who formed part of the landing-party at Cocos, in November, 1914, taking commandeered stores to the commandeered yacht Ayesha, in which they got away when the Emden had steamed off on the approach of H.M.A.S. Sydney.

Remains of the wireless mast on Cocos destroyed by dynamite during Fanning. The men are (right) the superintendent of the station and the wireless operator, who on the arrival of the Emden sent out the "SOS" which brought along the avenging Sydney.
