In loving memory of Major Thomas Roger JOHNSON-SMYTH of 68th Regiment Durham 1st Light Infantry attached to Natal Field force aged 42. Who was killed whilst gallantly leading his men at the action of Vaal Kranz Natal, South Africa on the 5th February 1900 at Potgieters Drift in the Tugela River “They that sleep in JESUS will God bring with HIM”
Born 1858 in Lisburn County Down Ireland. His mother may have been Elizabeth Ann Johnson-Smyth, nee Corken. Irish 1911 Census shows her residing at Derriaghy, near Lisburn, status, widow.
Husband of Everina Frances Elizabeth nee Adams who he married 18 April 1885 at Holy Trinity Church, Folkestone. 1891 stationed at Barnard Castle, Durham, England with his wife and family 1895 with his wife and family at Ingram Lisburn, 1901 his widow and daughter resided at 202 Main Street, Bryansford County Down
Wills and Admin, Ancestry. Thomas Roger JOHNSON-SMYTH major in the Durham Light Infantry died 5 February 1900 at Tugela Natal. Administration Dublin to Everina Frances Elizabeth Johnson-Smyth widow. Sealed London 28 November 1900. Effects £303 1s. in England
