Summary

Description

The captured German field guns are on exhibition along the side of the Mall under the trees from Admiralty Arch to Buckingham Palace. They were placed there on 5th November 1918 after being captured during the last days of WW1; they included field guns, howitzers, trench mortars and Machine guns. In total there were over 400 guns on display.

On Wednesday 13th November crowds of revellers took several of the guns to Trafalgar Square and attempted to burn them on a bonfire which damaged the plinth of Nelson's column and the surrounding paving.
