O Submarino Barracuda foi construído em França e o segundo de quatro submarinos da mesma classe da Marinha Portuguesa. Navegou com distinção nas profundezas dos mares entre 1968 e 2010. Com 54 metros de comprimento e deslocamento de 1.038 toneladas em imersão, o Barracuda tinha uma guarnição de 54 militares, podia operar até 300m de profundidade e embarcar 12 torpedos. Desempenhou missões de natureza diversificada: patrulha e recolha de informação em áreas de interesse nacional, projeção de forças de operações especiais, seguimento de contactos de interesse, colaboração com a Polícia Judiciária no combate ao tráfico e operações e exercícios nacionais e internacionais. Ao longo da sua vida cumpriu 3.090 dias de mar, navegando 52.622 horas, das quais 35.795 em imersão. Percorreu 263.358 milhas náuticas, o equivalente a 12 voltas ao mundo, com 180.000 milhas em imersão.
