English: Study of the Battle of Jutland, 31 May 1916 [No.5] This is a study for a larger panoramic view , probably in oil, of the Battle of Jutland: the 'scale of feet' along the bottom suggests the intention of being at least 12 feet across and it is one of a set, since Wyllie has labelled it 'No 5. Height of eye conning tower' (i.e. of a surface ship, not a submarine). His other inscriptions, left to right, identify the 'Thunderer' (1911), the destroyer 'Oak' (1912), 'Tiger' , '?Royal....', Jellicoe's flagship 'Iron Duke' with the 'High Seas Fleet' and the German light cruiser 'Wiesbaden' beyond, and the 'Warrior' on the far right. The drawing depicts the scene from the British battle line at about 18.20 on 31 May 1916: the column of smoke on the right marks the demise of the British armoured cruiser 'Defence' (1907) at this time.The crippled 'Wiesbaden' sank at about 01.30 on 1 June. |
