Description
Fotoförstoring av sjösättningen av pansarbåten Sverige på Götaverken 3 maj 1915. Under första världskriget sänktes många svenska fartyg och behovet av nybeställningar ökade. Svenska rederier hade tidigare köpt fartyg från utländska varv men under kriget var det omöjligt och de tvingades beställa nya inom landet. I hög grad förstärkte kriget också vissa långsiktigt verkande tendenser i det att svenska redare övergick från att köpa andrahandstonnage till att beställa nybyggen vid svenska varv. Den ökade efterfrågan på stora fartyg gynnade den typ av varv som Lindholmen och Götaverken i Göteborg representerade. Perioden präglades också av uppdrivna fraktpriser, vilket medförde spekulationer i fartygsvärlden. De neutrala fartygsländerna gynnades, och de svenska rederierna gjorde exceptionellt goda vinster. Detta innebar att en beställningsvåg sköljde över de svenska varven.Götaverken koncentrerade sig på de stora rederierna som kunder. Därtill kom beställningen 1912 på pansarskeppet Sverige. Den gav ingen vinst men prestige och erfarenheter att bygga stora fartyg. Sjösättningen av Sverige 1915 på Götaverken blev en viktig symbol för denna utveckling och kriget innebar därför ett svenskt varvsindustriellt genombrott.
