Royal Navy Surgeons' Case Book
Description

Archives & Manuscripts

Case book kept by the surgeons of a Royal Navy ship [HMS St George, a guard ship of ordinary stationed at Devonport]. Many of the patients are identifiable from the Navy List as being on board the St George, which is referred to by name on f. 44v., along with one of the surgeons, Dr Gimlette. Patients from some thirty other ships stationed at Devonport also appear in the case book.

The medical personnel on board the St George were surgeon James Browne (d. 1880), MD, assistant surgeon William Webber (d. 1852), MD, until February 1852, and assistant surgeon Hart Gimlette (d. 1877), MD, from March 1852. A number of patients were treated in the ship's sick bay; others were sent to hospital, i.e. the Royal Naval Hospital, Plymouth.
