1837 A.H. Potgieter gaat met zijn gevolg naar de streek thans bekend als de Oranje Vrijstaat en wordt daar aan de zuidzijde van de Vaalrivier onverwachts aan-gevallen door Moselekats die van uit de streek benoorden de Vaalrivier thans District Marico zonder aanleiding daartoe deze aanval op hen maakte en blanke kinderen en ook al hun vee met zich mede voerde. Moselekats werd ter herkrijging van kinderen en vee door Potgieter agtervolgd en verslagen met zijn Commandos. Moselekats vlucht uit het land. 1839 Potgieter trekt de Vaalrivier Noordwaarts over vindt het land geheel verlaten neemt er bezit van en de grondslag tot het bestaan der Republiek wordt gelegd. English: Paardekraal, east facet, that reads: 1837 A.H. Potgieter went with his company to the region now known as the Orange Free State, where on the south side of the Vaal river he was unexpectedly attacked by Mzilikazi who from the region north of the Vaal river, now district Marico, without provocation thereto launched this attack on him, and carried off white children besides all their livestock. Mzilikazi was in a quest to recover the children and livestock pursued and defeated by Potgieter and his Commandos. Mzilikazi fled from the country. 1839 Potgieter trekked north traversing the Vaal river, found the land completely desolate and took possession of it and the basis was established for the existence of the Republic. |
