Summary

Description
English: A Howitzer being fired, with three men standing to the right of the gun. One of the men is using a very long rod or taper to ignite the charge. The British-designed Howitzer was widely used, both by British and Canadians. It was a very large weapon which had to be fired close to the enemy lines due to its high angle of trajectory.

The Battle of Messines Ridge (June 1917), commanded by General Plumer, successfully relieved German pressure on the French Army. The British-designed Howitzer was widely used, both by British and Canadians. It was a very large weapon which had to be fired close to the enemy lines due to its high angle of trajectory.
[Original reads: 'THE GREAT BATTLE OF MESSINES RIDGE. A Howitzer in the act of firing.']
