| Notes | simi Lulu Van Rooyen and her husband Joseph Schutte owned a dairy farm in Kenya at the time of the Uprising. She had a number of Kikuyu staff with whom she had a good relationship. In the latter years of the Uprising the Schutte's agreed to establish a rehabilitation camp on their land for captured Mau Mau fighters and their families, in support of their reintegration back into society. Head of the Mau Mau in the camp at that time was Njuguna. He and Lulu became friends and two years later, when the local police moved him from the camp, he gave Lulu the container, simi and sjambok telling her, "Never forget me." Lulu, her husband and four children moved to South Africa shortly after, and Lulu eventually came on to New Zealand alone in 1977. Her second eldest son followed in 1985. The Mau Mau Uprising (other names include the Kenya Emergency, Mau Mau Rebellion, Mau Mau Revolt). NB The Colony and Protectorate of Kenya was part of the British Empire in Africa from 1920 until 1963 (Colony inland, Protectorate 10-mile wide coastal strip). | |||||||||||||||||||||||
