Oriented with north to top. / A rough sketch, made after the unsuccessful expedition under the command of General The Hon. James St Clair (1688-1762), showing the locations of landing and re-embarking, and the routes to Lorient by way of Guidel and Ploemeur, with the positions of the British camp and battery, and of the French cavalry. The Island of Groix is shown. // PHYSICAL PROPERTIES -- Watermark: Horn in crowned shield, a ‘4’ suspending the letters WR below; countermark: HR / Mark, stamped: 567 / Condition: six fold lines; formerly folded to 9.6 x 11.4 cm; small tear to bottom right edge // MEASUREMENTS -- 31.4 x 31.1 cm (image and neatline) / 32.6 x 32.2 cm (sheet) // PROVENANCE -- Probably from the collection of military and naval maps and prints formed by Prince William Augustus, Duke of Cumberland (1721-65), third son of George II; subsequently acquired by George III (1738-1820)
