Lt Col Settle was the only son of Lieutenant General Sir Henry Settle and was educated at Eton and Sandhurst. He was posted to the Western Front with his regiment in August 1914 and was severely wounded during the Battle of Mons. Whilst convalescing, Lt Col Settle studied machine gunnery and subsequently, on returning to active service, took command of 21 Battalion. He continued to serve on the Western Front until March 1918, during which time he was wounded four times and Mentioned in Despatches three times. Lt Col Settle was also awarded the Military Cross and Distinguished Service Order. He was killed, aged 26, at Cléry-sur-Somme whilst making what was reported as a gallant last stand with a small group of officers and men on 24 March 1918 during the German Offensive.
