English: A picture taken of USS Kalinin Bay (CVE-68) during the battle off Samar - part of the overall battle of Leye Gulf - taking the first of 15 direct shell hits. At 7:50, Kalinin Bay is hit by a 14-inch (356 mm) shell from the Japanese battleship Haruna which sliced through her hanger bay and destroyed her aircraft elevator.
