SouthernVirginia. This was soon found to beimpossible, and escape was sought inanother direction. Col. Pegram surren-dered with his entire force, on the 12thof July; and Gen. Garnett, striving tocross the mountains into the valley ofVirginia, was hotly pursued, on the13th, by the Union troops under CaptainBenham. At Carricks Ford, on theCheat River, the enemy attemptedto make a stand; but Geu. Garnettwas killed, and his forces were routedcompletely, only a small proportionout of several thousands makino- theirescape.* Our success, says General * Pollard, in his First Year of the War, p. 84,estimates Garnetts force at less than 5,000 infantrywith four companies of cavalry, and Pegrams at about1,600 men. McClellan is stated to have had with hima force of 20,000. Some Union writers make Garnettaforce to have been nearly 10 000, and Pegrams about2,000, while McClellans is set down at 10,000. Wegive the numbers, on what appears to be the bestauthority, without vouching for their accuracy.

Ill) POSITION OF EAST TEXXESSEE. 45 McClellau in his dispatch, July 14th, is complete, and secession is killed inthis country.1 On the 19th of July, McClellan issuedan address to his soldiers, full of glow-ing and encouraging words, inciting tofuture victory. On the 2 2d, however,(the day after the Bull Run disaster),he was summoned by the president tocommand the Army of the Potomac,and the army of occupation in WesternVirginia was assigned to Gen. Rose-crans. By the activity of McClellanthe Cheat Mountain Gaps, which form-ed the key to Western Virginia, wereentrenched and held by a strong forceof loyal troops. In regard to Eastern Tennessee, itwas not unnatural or unreasonable tofind there a spirit and determinationsimilar to those prevailing among loyalVirginians. The inhabitants weremostly agricultural, and less dependentupon slave labor than those in thewestern portion of the state, and theywere ardently attached to the Unionand its privileges.
