Summary

Description

The Hs293 was a German WW2 anti-shipping guided missile. Designed as a glide bomb, a liquid-fuel rocket motor was added to increase the range. It was radio-controlled to its target by a director in a nearby aircraft. Carried by He111, He177, Do217 or Fw200 aircraft, over 1,000 were built and were successfully employed against allied shipping, sinking at least 15 ships. This example was transferred to the Smithsonian Institute in 1984 from the US Navy Explosive Ordnance School in Indian Head, Maryland. It is now part of the National Air and Space Museum and is seen on display in the James S. McDonnell Space Hangar at the Steven F. Udvar-Hazy Center Washington Dulles International Airport, Chantilly, Virginia
