Summary
| Description | "Battle" Class (2nd Group) Destroyer "HMS Matapan", 2,480 tons, launched 1945, at Devonport Dockyard during the Plymouth Navy Day, 08/61. Behind is "Abdeil" Class (2nd Group) High Speed Minelayer "HMS Apollo", 2,650 tons, launched 1943. In my opinion, the "Battles" were aesthetically the most impressive conventional desroyers produced for the RN. The "Abdiels" had the incredible maximum speed of 40kts - which they needed on some of the most dangerous missions in WWII. Scanned photograph taken with a simple Brownie 127, hence dubious quality. |
