Summary

Description

A contemporary model of the Modified 1719 Establishment 20-gun 6th Rate Sloop HMS Dolphin at the Glasgow Transport Museum, 2 March 2007.

The Dolphin was one of two launched and completed in 1732 as a broadened modification by Richard Stacey, the Master Shipwright at Deptford Dockyard, of the standard 1719 Establishment 20-gun Post Ship. Both ships measured 106ft x 30.5 ft x 9.2 ft, had a burthen of 428 tons and were armed 20x6 pdrs on the upper deck, with rowports along the lower deck. These were closed up but could be opened up if necessary.

The Dolphin’s sister, HMS Sheerness was broken up in 1742, but HMS Dolphin ad a longer life. In 1755 she was converted to a fireship HMS Firebrand but she was never used as such. She was in such good condition that it was decided to re-convert her back into a 6th Rate Sloop in 1757 as HMS Penguin but she was taken and burnt by two French frigates in 1760.
