English: [bottom, below title:] To Sir James Saumarez Bar.t this View of his putting to Sea on the 12.th July 1801, with five sail of the Line and one Frigate, in the face of an Enemy, consisting of ten sail of the Line, two of which were of 112 Guns each; / with three Frigates, and several Gun Boats: is most respectfully inscribed by his Obed.t Serv.t / Rob.t Dodd.

A view of the preliminary stage of the second naval Battle of Algeciras, fought at night in the Strait of Gibraltar, on 12 July 1801 in which the British, commanded by Rear Admiral Saumarez, defeated the Franco-Spanish fleet. French Revolutionary Wars (1792-1802): Anglo-Spanish War (1798-1802).

This view shows the British ships in the foreground, putting out to sea before engaging the Franco-Spanish ships in action during the night. Having been repulsed during the First Battle of Algeciras Bay on 6 July, Rear Admiral James Saumarez (1757-1836; 1st Baron Saumarez) captured a Spanish ship (two others having sunk) with no British losses.
