Summary

Description
English: The German submarine U-801 sinking with its bow high, some 550 kmest of Santo Antão island, Cape Verde, on 17 March 1944. The U.S. Navy destroyer USS Corry (DD-463) is coming up at right. The submarine was heavily damaged by aircraft and surface ships of Task Group 21.16, centered around the escort carrier USS Block Island (CVE-21). The crew then scuttled the boat. The photo was taken from a Grummen TBM Avenger of Composite Squadron 6 (VC-6), based on Block Island. 10 crewmembers of U-801 died, 47 survived.
