Description
English: General Wyndham's assault on the Redan.

Coloured tinted lithograph after artist unknown, from 'The Officers' Portfolio of the Striking Reminiscences of the War from Drawings, Photographs and Notes, taken on the spot, made into Complete Pictures by Eminent Artists', published by Dickinson Brothers, London, 1855 (c).

After the French had captured the Malakhov tower at Sevastpol, the British attacked the nearby Redan on 8 September 1855. Although they managed to break into the fortification, the British were pinned down by Russian troops firing from behind a barricade at the rear of the Redan. In spite of the efforts made by Major-General (later Lieutenant-General Sir) Charles Ash Windham (1810-1870) to encourage his men to advance, they were unable to do so and eventually had to retreat. Windham is shown towards the rear of the picture, dressed in blue and waving his hat.
