DescriptionFrench220mmTrenchMortar1915.jpg
Photograph showing French 220 mm trench mortar immediately after firing, late 1915.
The caption reads : ""Then All Was Lost in the Roar of the Guns." This remarkable photograph shows a French trench immediately after the firing of a 220-millimetre mortar in the Argonnes. The smoke has just left the gun muzzle and its cloud, drifting back, encompasses the men who are bringing up fresh shells. You can see them stooping over in the haze."
Comment : These appear to be 220 mm de Bange mortars dating from 1880/1881.
