Description

Forte militar de defesa da costa, construído no século XVII por D. João IV.

Tem uma arquitectura militar maneirista de planta rectangular. É circundado por um muro ameado com escadas de acesso interiores. No centro, localizam-se as dependências de apoio, abobadadas, e a cisterna.

O Forte de Oitavos distingue-se bem dos demais pequenos fortes edificados na barra do Tejo durante o reinado de D. João IV, graças à sua planimetria.

O pórtico merece destaque pela sua riqueza decorativa, numa estrutura de linhas curvas.

O Forte é protegido por uma linha de mosqueteria que o circunda e se estende para oeste, a fim de poder defender a enseada.

Tem uma estrutura de alvenaria rebocada e cantaria, em calcário, argamassa, com telhado de duas águas na caserna. Algumas das salas são abobadadas.
