O Forte do Rato, também conhecido como Fortaleza de Santo António ou Forte da Ilha das Lebres, foi mandado edificar durante o reinado de D. Sebastião para proteger a foz do rio Gilão e a entrada do porto de Tavira. Mais tarde, em 1670, com a construção do Forte de S. João, o Forte do Rato passou a ter um papel secundário na estratégia defensiva. Porém, a antiga fortaleza foi renovada, dado que a sua implantação era essencial para reforçar a linha de fogo do novo baluarte. A partir do início do século XIX, o número de soldados aquartelados no Forte do Rato foi diminuindo, até que a guarnição foi extinta em 1840. De arquitetura militar da época moderna, a fortaleza possui planta poligonal com baluartes nos ângulos, cornija na muralha exterior, e, no interior da praça, distinguem-se, ainda, o espaço de aquartelamento, o paiol e o poço de abastecimento. <a href="https://revive.turismodeportugal.pt/pt-pt/forte-rato" rel="noreferrer nofollow">revive.turismodeportugal.pt/pt-pt/forte-rato</a> |
