First a Land Rover (the RSM's) got stuck. Then a Ferret Scout Car which was sent to pull the Land Rover out. REME came to the rescue with a FV432 and a FV434, met by the RSM with cups of tea,(something afoot). The 432 (mine) threw a track. The 434's also threw a track , then its fuel feed transfer pump packed in,and after its renewal the main Fuel Injection pump followed suit. With no fuel lock- off tap at the fuel tanks, all of the fuel had to be wasted in the sandy ground.(actually a tunnel had to be dug in the sand under the 434 hull in order to reach the access hatch of the transfer pump) A Stalwart 6x6 HMLC came to deliver fuel to the 434 and got bogged in,in spite of being warned. The LAD's Leyland Martian Heavy Recovery came in and got stuck on a fallen tree it had pulled down on its way winching itself in. A second Leyland Heavy recovery came, surveyed the scene and legged it hurriedly. We were now into Saturday and endex was the Friday evening when the rest of unit returned to Muenster.
Along came the Brigade HQ and Signal Squadron ASM with a Bedford RL w/ winch, winching itself into location. Sunken tracks were pulled back into place , trees freed from under the Leyland, and the Land Rover and Ferret winched out .
The Bedford RL saved the day. The following Monday was a German holiday, this area we had made a mess of, was a recreation park. The locals were certainly not amused.
