Barr was hit in the Atlantic Ocean by an acoustic torpedo from the German submarine U-549 at 2030 hrs on 29 May 1944. U-549 hat earlier torpedoed the escort carrier USS Block Island (CVE-21) and was itself sunk later that night. |
