Title
Copper alloy Medieval mace head
Description
English: Copper alloy cast knopped mace head, medieval, incomplete. This mace head consists of a hollow cylindrical shaft with 4 projecting four-sided knops in a central row and 7 three-sided (half) knops on two other rows either side of the central one (the eighth knop being missing with an old and worn break edge). The hollow shaft would suggest that this mace head had originally been fixed to either a wooden or metal pole. The mace head measures 46.3mm long, 47.9mm in diameter (20.6mm of which is the hollow shaft), and the points of the knops are worn and measure 10-15mm long. It weighs 109.82g.
Only a few examples of knobbed mace heads from England have so far been found. A parallel to this piece can be found on this database, Object ID LIN9570B5, and a similar example was also found in the cesspit of Dryslwyn Castle in Wales, believed to date to the 1287 siege.
