For documentary purposes the German Federal Archive often retained the original image captions, which may be erroneous, biased, obsolete or politically extreme. "Zentralbild-Biscan Str-Mü. 1.8.1952 Wiederherstellung der Marienkirche in Magdeburg am 28.7.52 beendet. UBz, Die zum "Kloster unserer lieben Frauen" gehörende Kirche ist eins der ältesten romanischen Bauwerke Deutschlands. Vor rund 700 Jahren wurde die Kirche unter Erzbischof Albrecht II. völlig umgestaltet, so dass die einzigartige Verschmelzung von romanischem und gotischem Stil entstand, den die Kirche heute noch darbietet. Die Marienkirche hat 1631 die Zerstörung Magdeburgs überlebt. Im Frühjahr 1945, am letzten Tag vor der Besetzung Magdeburgs, zerstörten amerikanische Bomben Kirche und Kloster. Dank der Hilfe der Regierung der DDR konnten nunmehr die Schäden in jahrelanger Arbeit beseitigt und das wertvolle Kulturdenkmal vor dem Verfall gerettet werden." |
