| Description |
English: A Martello Tower at East Lane, Bawdsey on the Suffolk Coast, now converted to a house, 7 October 2006. The tower is is threatened by severe sea erosion, as is much of this coast. To save the tower a large quantity of Norwegian stones was dumped in fron of the tower but this merely resulted in the sea eating around it. The Martello towers were inspired by defensive towers built in Corsica since the 15th Century and in particular the Genoese-built Torri di Mortella which two Royal Navy warships bombarded unsucessfully for two days at the cost of much damage to themselves, the tower evetually falling to British land forces. Note the difference in the English spelling and the Corsican spelling, the result of the characteristic English habit of getting foreign names wrong. |
