Français : Victoire d’Alexandre sur Darius, roi des Perses, à Issus (333 avant J.-C.), la défaite postérieure de Darius à Arbelles (331 avant J.-C.) étant à écarter à cause de la présence de la famille de Darius figurée ici à droite (les proches du roi perse tombés en captivité au lendemain de la bataille d’Issus ne pouvaient se trouver à Arbelles). Le titre inadéquat d’Arbelles qui apparaît dès le XVIIIe s. (Dezallier d’Argenville) n’est pas repris 1793, mais resurgit en 1799 (voir Hist.) pour persister au moins jusqu’en 1937 (comm. écrite de E. Bruley, cf. Michel). – Chef-d’œuvre de l’artiste par la taille (l’un de ses plus grands tableaux) et par la profusion virtuose des figures, dans une ultime démonstration de fantastique d’esprit maniériste.
