Summary

Description

The United State Army Corps of Engineers decided long ago that Fort San Jacinto was unworthy of preservation, and the site is gradually being filled with spoils from dredging the ship channels.

The loos wet silt makes it impossible, at most times, to get near the old structures, but yesterday, between the ongling drought and the absence of recent spoils, I was able to get into Battery 235, but not the fire control tower.

The ground is cracked and the cracks go deep, defining spongey columns of drying silt, some firm enough to walk on, others not, with little to distinguish the two but the degree of movement, of stability.

The mud fills the structures, is nearly to the tops of the doors.
