Title
A Post Medieval iron mortuary rapier sword sword (1550-1675).
Description
English: A Post Medieval iron mortuary rapier sword sword (1550-1675). The sword has a double-edged blade with no ricasso (section near the hilt that does not have an edge) and a whittle tang into the hilt. The elaborate guard is decorated chased cut steel, the shape is slightly distorted. The handle is carved wood with bands of double incised lines. The spherical pommel, like the guard, is chased cut steel. Hazel Forsyth suggests this is probably a gentleman's dress sword rather than a weapon because it is too ornate and decorative for a standard issue campaign mortuary sword. Dimensions: diameter of pommel: 36.83mm; diameter of handle: 26.44mm; length: 930mm; width of blade: 30.05mm; thickness: 5.32mm; weight: 758.0g. Identification by Hazel Forsyth, Senior Post Medieval Curator, Museum of London.
