Summary

Description 80-G-700311: In May 1941, USS Semmes (DD 189) joined USS Leary (DD 158) and USS New York (BB 34) in becoming a radar experimental ship marking the advent of microwave equipment. Semmes successfully tracked enemy craft with the sensitive antennae mount on her mast. Photograph May 1941. U.S. Navy photograph, now in the collections of the National Archives. (2016/06/28).
