English: 330-PS-9095 (USN 1036817): HMS Sprat underway. Lieutenant R. N. Dodgson, RN, and Lieutenant D.A. Thompson, RN, on deck of the submarine operating near Little Creek, Virginia, Amphibious Base. Photograph released August 11, 1958. (11/18/2014). Additional info: HMS Sprat, an experimental British submarine, made a recent voyage to the United States “piggy-back” style on board Alcore, a U.S. Navy transport ship. Launched in 1955, Sprat, which carries a crew complement of seven (two officers and five enlisted men), has an important advantage over conventional subs with her capability of maneuvering in tight areas. The miniature submarine is currently operated with U.S. Navy units in harbor defense exercises at Little Creek, Virginia. Photograph released August 11, 1958. (11/18/2014). |
